Finding Our Way reveals rare insight into coping with mental illhealth

Finding Our Way, a new DVD of ten short films, has been launched revealing a rare insight into people’s experience of mental illness in migrant and refugee communities.

These personal stories are the result of a unique joint digital story telling project between Mental Health in Multicultural Australia (MHiMA) and the Australian Centre for Moving Image (ACMI). The project involved a four-day workshop in which volunteer participants, from different parts of Australia, learnt how to create digital stories and share the experiences that have helped them to cope with their problems, such as music, poetry and family support.

As far as we know, nothing like this has been undertaken before in Australia. Hearing directly from people from diverse backgrounds is important for everyone in the community, including people with a lived experience of mental health issues, and invaluable for those working in the health sector.

A selection of the stories are now part of the ACMI collection at Federation Square in Melbourne. Watch the videos on the MHiMA website here and view the SBS World News  item that includes interviews with participants and MHiMA representatives.

For more information about the project contact Sue McDonough or Erminia Colucci.
